Securing MikroTik Routers With PPTP VPN Connections A Step-by-Step Tutorial

Yo what's good y'all, I just set up a Mikrotik PPTP VPN on RouterOS and let me tell you, it was a journey but I'm gonna break it down for you. First off, shoutout to the homie who made this guide with pictures because without them, boy oh boy I would have been lost.

Step 1 Screenshot

Alright, so let's get into it. Before we start, let me give y'all a bit of background info on what a PPTP VPN is. PPTP stands for Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol and it's a way to create a secure connection between two devices over the internet, in our case between our Mikrotik router and our device that we want to access the internet from.

Step 1: Open up RouterOS

The first thing you wanna do is open up your RouterOS. If you haven't configured your RouterOS yet, I suggest you do that first because this guide assumes you have some basic knowledge of RouterOS. Once you're in, go to the left sidebar and click on 'PPP'.

Step 2: Click on PPP

Once you're in the PPP section, you should see a few different options. We want to click on 'PPTP Server' so that we can set up our VPN.

Step 3: Create a PPTP Server Profile

Now we're getting into the nitty gritty. Click on the '+' sign to create a new PPTP Server Profile. This is where we're going to configure our VPN settings.

Step 4: Configure General Settings

The first tab we want to click on is 'General'. This is where we'll set up some basic settings for our VPN. You'll want to enter a name for your VPN in the 'Name' field and select what interface you want to use from the 'Interface' dropdown. You'll also want to enter the IP address range for your VPN clients in the 'Local Address' and 'Remote Address' fields.

Step 5: Configure Authentication

The next tab we want to configure is 'Authentication'. This is where we'll set up how our VPN clients will authenticate with our Mikrotik router. You can choose between either 'PAP' or 'MSCHAPv2'. Personally, I went with 'MSCHAPv2' because it's more secure.

Step 6: Configure Encryption

The 'Encryption' tab is where we'll set up our encryption settings. You can choose between either 'None', 'Required', or 'Optional'. I went with 'Required' because I want my VPN to be as secure as possible.

Step 7: Configure Compression

The 'Compression' tab is where we'll set up if we want our VPN to use compression. You can choose between either 'None', 'LZO', or 'Deflate'. I went with 'None' because I don't want to sacrifice any security for speed.

Step 8: Configure IP Binding

The next tab we want to configure is 'IP Binding'. This is where we'll set up which IP addresses our VPN clients are allowed to use. You can either select 'Use IP Pool' and enter in a range of IP addresses, or you can select 'Use Address' and enter in a specific IP address.

Step 9: Configure PPP Settings

The last tab we want to configure is 'PPP'. This is where we'll set up some basic PPP settings, such as the maximum number of clients allowed and the maximum PPP packets allowed.

Step 10: Create a PPP User

Now that we've set up our VPN settings, we need to create a PPP user. To do this, go to the left sidebar and click on 'Secrets'. Click on the '+' sign to create a new PPP user.

Step 11: Configure PPP User Settings

Now we're going to configure our PPP user settings. You'll want to enter in a username and password for your PPP user, and select what profile you want to use from the 'Profile' dropdown. Make sure you select the profile we just created in step 3.

Step 12: Enable the PPTP Server

Now we're in the home stretch. Click on the 'PPTP Server' tab on the left sidebar and make sure the 'Enabled' box is checked.

Step 13: Restart Your Router

Once you've completed all the steps, it's time to restart your Mikrotik router so that all the changes take effect. After your router has restarted, you should be good to go!

Conclusion

And there you have it, a step-by-step guide on how to set up a Mikrotik PPTP VPN on RouterOS. I know it can be a bit daunting at first, but with some patience and a little bit of know-how, anyone can do it. Now go out there and secure your internet connection like a boss!
