MikroTik Router Firewall Enhancing Network Security
As more and more businesses are moving towards cloud-based solutions, protecting their network and devices through a firewall is becoming increasingly crucial. In this tutorial, we will be discussing how to configure a firewall on a MikroTik router.

What is a firewall?
A firewall is a hardware or software-based network security device that monitors and controls inbound and outbound network traffic. It enables you to create rules that allow or deny traffic based on its source, destination, and other characteristics.
Why is a firewall important?
A firewall acts as the first line of defense in protecting your network and devices from unauthorized access and malicious attacks. Without a firewall, your network and devices would be vulnerable to cyber threats, allowing attackers to gain access to your sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, and credit card details.
How to configure a firewall on a MikroTik Router?
Before we dive into the firewall setup, it's important to first understand the concept of zones. A zone is simply a network segment that has a common security level. For example, your local network might be considered a trusted zone while the internet is considered an untrusted zone.
With that in mind, let's get started!
Step 1: Configuring the interface addresses
The first step is to configure the interface addresses. This is done to assign IP addresses to each interface on the MikroTik router.
- Login to your MikroTik router using the winbox tool or web interface.
- Click on IP -> Addresses from the left-hand side menu.
- Add the IP addresses of each interface on the router.
- Under the Interface drop-down menu, select the interface to which the IP address belongs.
- Click Apply and then Ok to save the changes.
Step 2: Creating address lists
The next step is to create address lists. Address lists are used to group IP addresses and networks together for easy management. In our scenario, we will create two address lists: one for trusted networks and another for untrusted networks.
- Click on IP -> Firewall from the left-hand side menu.
- Click on the Address Lists tab.
- Click on the + icon to add a new address list.
- Give the address list a name, for example, Trusted_Networks.
- Add the IP addresses or networks that you consider trusted.
- Create another address list called Untrusted_Networks and add the IP addresses or networks that you consider untrusted.
Step 3: Setting up the firewall rules
The final step is to create the firewall rules. Firewall rules are used to allow or block traffic based on the criteria defined in the rule. In our scenario, we will create two firewall rules: one for trusted networks and another for untrusted networks.
- Click on IP -> Firewall from the left-hand side menu.
- Click on the Filter Rules tab.
- Click on the + icon to add a new firewall rule.
- Under the General tab, give the rule a name, for example, Allow_Trusted_Networks.
- Under the Src. Address, select the Trusted_Networks address list we created earlier.
- Under the Action tab, select Accept to allow traffic from the trusted network.
- Create another firewall rule called Block_Untrusted_Networks.
- Under the Src. Address, select the Untrusted_Networks address list we created earlier.
- Under the Action tab, select Drop to block traffic from the untrusted network.
Once you have completed these steps, your MikroTik router should have a basic firewall configuration that blocks incoming traffic from untrusted networks while allowing incoming traffic from trusted networks.
Conclusion
A firewall is an essential component of any network security strategy. By configuring a firewall on your MikroTik router, you can protect your network from cyber threats and unauthorized access. By following the steps outlined in this tutorial, you should now have a basic firewall configuration up and running.
Remember to keep your firewall rules up to date, as cyber threats are constantly evolving. Regularly review your firewall rules to ensure they still meet the security needs of your network.
