  • On the switch(es), configure the VLANs and their corresponding VLAN IDs.
  • Configure the VLAN interfaces on the router.
  • Create VLAN sub-interfaces on the router for each VLAN.
  • Connect the switch(es) to the router and configure the respective ports on the switch(es) as trunk ports.

VLAN Tagging:

The next step is VLAN tagging, which involves adding a VLAN ID to each packet that belongs to a particular VLAN. This is done so that network devices can understand which VLAN a packet belongs to and properly route it. The process of VLAN tagging involves:

InterVLAN Routing:

Once the VLANs have been created and VLAN tagging has been configured, you can then proceed to interVLAN routing. InterVLAN routing is the process of allowing communication between different VLANs on the same network. The process of interVLAN routing involves:

  • Configuring the router to create sub-interfaces for each VLAN.
  • Assigning an IP address to each sub-interface.
  • Configuring the router to allow communication between the sub-interfaces.

VLAN Routing:

The final step in VLAN routing configuration is VLAN routing itself. VLAN routing is the process of allowing communication between VLANs on different networks. The process of VLAN routing involves:

  • Configuring the router's physical interface(s) for the network(s) to be connected.
  • Configuring the router to create a VLAN aware bridge between the physical interface(s) and the VLAN sub-interfaces.
  • Assigning an IP address to the VLAN-aware bridge interface.
  • Configuring the router to allow communication between the VLAN sub-interfaces and the VLAN-aware bridge interface.
  • Configuring the router to allow communication between the VLAN-aware bridge interface and the physical interface(s).

By following these steps, you can successfully configure VLAN routing between MikroTik RouterOS. This configuration not only enhances network performance and security, but also makes network administration much more simple and straightforward.
