Exploring MikroTik Router Bridge Configuration For VPN Deployment

Today, we are going to discuss the basic configuration process of the Mikrotik Router. This process is easy to understand, and you will be able to follow it without any difficulty. The aim of this guide is to help you set up your Mikrotik Router in the right way.

Mikrotik Router Basic Configuration Process

The first thing that you need to do is connect to your Mikrotik Router. You need to connect to the router using a web browser. Type the IP address of the router in your web browser's address bar, and press on enter. Once you are connected, you will see a login screen. Enter your login details and press on login.

Now, let’s move on to the actual configuration. Here are the steps that you need to follow:

Step 1: Update the Router's Firmware

The first thing that you need to do is update the firmware of your router. This is important because it will ensure that your router is running the latest version of the software. To update the firmware, go to System > Packages and click on Check for Updates. If there is an update available, click on Download & Install. Wait for the update to install, and then reboot the router.

Step 2: Configure the WAN Interface

The next step is to configure the WAN interface. The WAN interface is the interface that connects to the internet. To configure the WAN interface, go to Interfaces > Double click on ether1 (or whichever interface your ISP is connected to). In the General tab, configure your IP address, subnet mask, and default gateway according to your ISP's settings. In the DNS tab, add your ISP's DNS servers.

Step 3: Configure the LAN Interface

The third step is to configure the LAN interface. The LAN interface is the interface that connects to your local network. To configure the LAN interface, go to Interfaces > Double click on ether2 (or whichever interface your local network is connected to). In the General tab, configure your IP address, subnet mask, and DHCP server. Make sure that the DHCP server is enabled so that your local network devices can obtain IP addresses automatically.

Step 4: Configure Firewall Rules

The fourth step is to configure firewall rules. Firewall rules are important because they help to protect your network from unwanted traffic. To configure firewall rules, go to IP > Firewall. You will see a list of firewall rules. Make sure that the default rules are enabled. These rules will ensure that your network is protected from unwanted traffic. You can also add custom firewall rules if you want.

Step 5: Configure NAT

The fifth step is to configure NAT. NAT is important because it allows you to share your internet connection with your local network. To configure NAT, go to IP > Firewall > NAT. You will see a list of NAT rules. Add a new rule with the following settings:

  • Chain: srcnat
  • Action: masquerade
  • Out. Interface: ether1 (or whichever interface your ISP is connected to)

Step 6: Configure DHCP Server

The last step is to configure the DHCP server. The DHCP server is responsible for assigning IP addresses to devices on your local network. To configure the DHCP server, go to IP > DHCP Server. Set up the DHCP server according to your requirements. You can set the lease time, the range of IP addresses to be assigned, and other settings.

That's it! You have successfully configured your Mikrotik Router. If you follow these steps, you will be able to set up your router without any difficulty. Good luck!
