MikroTik Router VPN Troubleshooting And Tips
Holy firewall, Batman! Have you ever had trouble accessing content because it's not available in your country? Fear not, my fellow internet enthusiasts! I have a solution that will have you bouncing around the interwebs with ease. And it involves a MikroTik Router. Say what?! Don't worry, I'll explain everything.
So, what's a MikroTik Router? It's a fancy piece of equipment that can help us set up a Virtual Private Network (VPN). A VPN is like a secret tunnel that lets us connect to the internet from a different location, making it appear as if we're browsing from that location. Pretty cool, huh?
Now, let's get down to business and set up our VPN with the MikroTik Router.
Step 1: Get a VPN Account
First things first, you need a VPN account. There are many VPN service providers out there, so do your research and find one that works best for you. Once you've signed up, you should receive an email with your VPN account credentials. Keep these handy, as we'll need them soon.
Step 2: Access the Router's Configuration Page
Now, we need to access the MikroTik Router's configuration page. Open up your preferred web browser and type in the IP address for the router in the address bar. If you don't know the IP address, try the default (http://192.168.88.1). This should take you to the router's login page. Enter your username and password to log in.
Step 3: Configure the Router for VPN
Once you've successfully logged in, you'll need to configure the router for VPN by following these steps:
- Click on the IP tab on the left-hand side of the page
- Select the Firewall option from the drop-down menu
- Click on the NAT tab at the top of the page
- Click on the Add New button to add a new NAT rule
- In the General tab, select Chain as srcnat
- In the Out Interface tab, select the interface that you use to connect to the internet
- Click on the Action tab
- Set the Action as Masquerade
- Click Apply and then OK to save the rule
Step 4: Configure the VPN Connection
Now, let's configure the VPN connection using the credentials from your VPN account.
- Click on the PPP tab on the left-hand side of the page
- Select the Interface tab from the drop-down menu
- Click on the Add New button to add a new VPN interface
- In the General tab, give the interface a name (e.g. MyVPN)
- Select the VPN option from the Type drop-down menu
- Enter the VPN server IP address in the Local Address field
- Enter your VPN account username and password in the appropriate fields
- Click on the Dial Out tab
- In the Profile field, select the name of the VPN profile provided by your VPN service provider
- Click Apply and then OK to save the VPN settings
Step 5: Connect to the VPN
You're almost there! It's time to connect to the VPN.
- Click on the PPP tab on the left-hand side of the page
- Select the Secrets tab from the drop-down menu
- Click on the Add New button to add a new VPN user
- In the Name field, enter your VPN account username
- In the Password field, enter your VPN account password
- In the Service field, select the VPN interface that you just created
- Click Apply and then OK to save the settings
- Click on the Interfaces tab on the left-hand side of the page
- Check the box next to the VPN interface that you just created
- Click on the Connect button at the top of the page
Congratulations! You're now connected to a VPN using your MikroTik Router. You should now be able to browse the internet as if you're located in the location of the VPN server. Happy browsing!
